Meet Skip Howes
Skip Howes is the owner and president of Scott Homes Ltd. Born in Germany and a self-proclaimed “military brat,” he has lived many places around the world. In 1967, his father moved the family to Colorado Springs.
It was in high school where his passion for construction started when he took a drafting class. He enjoyed it so much that he signed up the next semester for an architectural drafting class where the assigned project was to design a house. After that class he decided his career path was to be an architect. Skip finished high school at Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs and enrolled at the University of Colorado, School of Architecture at Boulder.
To pay for college he went from construction site to construction site in Colorado Springs asking if any of the builders needed workers. One of the builders said yes and put him to work as a framer. That summer and during each school break he would earn money framing houses to pay for college.
Skip graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in Architecture, and a BS in Business with a major in real estate. Since then, he has worked in many capacities within the construction industry: architect, land developer, real estate agent, employing real estate broker, and home builder.
At one point, his father told him, “You don’t need to be an expert in everything to be successful, you just need to surround yourself with qualified and capable people.” And so, Skip became involved with many Home Builder and REALTOR associations where he has made many friends and surrounded himself with people who he says, “are a whole lot smarter than me.”
Skip strongly believes education and obtaining knowledge is the key to adapting the company to incorporate performance trends into their construction projects. During his career, Skip has obtained several professional designations including: Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Graduate Builder (CGB), Certified Green Professional (CGP) and Certified New Home Sales Professional (CSP).
Perhaps the most important person he surrounded himself with came in 1971 when he went on a blind date and met his wife, Debbie. He and Debbie have been married since 1975 and have two children of whom they are most proud.
Skip and Debbie work together in Scott Homes and in their real estate business, The Howes Team at RE/MAX Performance, where Skip is the Employing Broker.
When they are not working, you will often find them flying their hot air balloon, attending hot air balloon events around the west or just enjoying time with friends in the hot air ballooning community.
